2026 Best’s Rankings: Berkshire Still Top Medical Professional Liability Writer Despite Premium Dip
OLDWICK, N.J. //BestWire// - Berkshire Hathaway Insurance retained its leading position as the largest writer of medical professional liability coverage in the United States during 2025, despite direct premiums written declining 1.3%.
Berkshire Hathaway saw DPW total $2.18 billion and held a 16% market share this past year. The Doctors Co. Insurance Group ranked No. 2 with DPW of $1.32 billion, up 4% from the prior year.
Rounding out the top five insurers were CNA Insurance Cos., with DPW of $808.8 million; MAG Mutual Cos., $677.2 million; and ProAssurance Group, $655.9 million.
Coverys Cos. saw DPW decline 9% to $433.5 million, the biggest drop among the top 25 carriers in the sector. Mountain Laurel Risk Retention Group saw the biggest increase in DPW, which rose 60.8% to $201.1 million.
Overall, the sector’s 2025 DPW increased 5.1% to $13.69 billion and the adjusted loss ratio worsened to 59.5 from 54.6 the year prior.
