2026 Best's Rankings: Berkshire Hathaway Takes DPW Top Spot Among Accident & Health Lines
OLDWICK, N.J. //BestWire// - Berkshire Hathaway Insurance topped the list of U.S. property/casualty writers ranked by 2025 accident & health lines direct premiums written, according to a new Best's Rankings report.
The company moved into the top spot with DPW of $1.27 billion in 2025, up 38.1% from the prior year. Berkshire Hathaway had been ranked fourth.
Fairfax Financial (USA) Group moved to No. 2 from third as its $1.24 billion in DPW was up 33.3% from the prior year, according to the report. It displaced Chubb INA Group, which took No. 3 after being second in the prior year. Chubb's DPW of $1.15 billion in the line increased 13%.
State Farm Group was fourth after having the top spot a year earlier, with DPW of $1.15 billion up 3.7%, according to the report. Swiss Reinsurance Group moved up one spot to No. 5, with its $877.7 million in DPW up 29.3%.
The report ranks companies by accident and health lines DPW and the percent change in premiums, as well as market share for 2025, 2024 and 2023, adjusted loss ratios for those years, and the percentage of company premiums the line comprises.
