Mississippi Insurance Commissioner Chaney Cruises to GOP Primary Win
JACKSON, Miss. //BestWire// - Mississippi Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney will get another opportunity to keep his seat after securing an easy victory over challenger Mitch Young in the Republican primary election.
Mike ChaneyChaney led Young with 80.2% of the ballots cast, according to unofficial returns.
Chaney is seeking a fifth term in office. He will face Democrat Bruce Burton, who was unopposed, in November.
“It is an honor to be the Republican nominee for insurance commissioner and state fire marshal,” Chaney said. “I look forward to continuing my protection of consumers, regulating the insurance industry, and improving first responder and firefighter training. I will continue to address improvements in access to health care and health insurance.”
Young is a former U.S. Navy serviceman who previously ran unsuccessfully for governor.
Chaney was elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives in 1992 and the Senate in 1999, before being elected insurance commissioner in 2007.
Chaney said Mississippi has been able to help policyholders who lost coverage due to carrier insolvencies, avoiding the market troubles faced by other Gulf Coast states such as Florida and Louisiana (BestWire, July 25, 2023).
