Best's Rankings: Independence Pet Remains No. 3 Pet Insurer as DPW Increases 79.9%
OLDWICK, N.J. //BestWire// - Independence Pet Insurance Group remained the third-largest writer of pet insurance plans in 2025 with a 79.9% increase in direct premiums written to $884.1 million, according to a new Best's Rankings report.
The company increased its market share to 16.2% from 10.6% a year earlier, narrowing the gap with No. 2 Nationwide P&C Group, where premiums declined 6.4% as its market share lowered to 17.5% from 21.9% in 2024.
No. 1 Trupanion Insurance Group's DPW rose 11.7% to $1.22 billion, according to the rankings.
None of the six largest pet insurance plan writers traded positions. But the line was dynamic: 20 of the 21 remaining top writers either moved up or down in the rankings.
Overall, U.S. pet insurance plan writers increased direct premiums written 17.3% last year to $5.47 billion.
The rankings include 2025 direct premiums written, two years of market share and adjusted loss ratios and percent change and the line's share of company premiums.
