2026 Best's Rankings: Berkshire Hathaway Keeps No. 1 MPL Claims-Made Spot
OLDWICK, N.J. //BestWire// - Berkshire Hathaway Insurance remained the largest U.S. medical professional liability (claims made) writer in 2025, despite a 3.1% decline in direct premiums written, according to a new Best's Rankings report.
The company's DPW totaled $1.29 billion last year, far exceeding the $871.1 million written by No. 2 The Doctors Company Insurance Group.
Industry DPW for the line increased 5.6% to $10.73 billion, according to the Best's Rankings.
There were wide swings among the 10 largest insurers. MAG Mutual Cos. increased direct premiums written 18.2% to $612.3 million. It moved up to No. 3 from No. 4.
Coverys Cos. direct premiums written in the line dropped 11.7% to $291.6 million and it slipped to No. 9 from No. 8.
The report includes 2025 direct premiums written and percentage change, three years of market share and adjusted loss ratios and the percentage share of company premiums for the line.
