2026 Best's Rankings: State Farm Heads P/C Mutuals as Annual NPW Rises to $113.79 Billion
OLDWICK, N.J. //BestWire// - State Farm Group boosted net premiums written 5.6% to $113.79 billion last year, accounting for more than one-third of the $308 billion in premiums written by all U.S. property/casualty mutual insurers in 2025, according to a new Best's Rankings report.
However, NPW declined last year at three of the five largest U.S. property/casualty mutual insurers.
Auto-Owners Insurance Group overtook Nationwide P&C Group to become the fourth-largest writer after its NPW grew 7.6% to $16.6 billion as Nationwide's premiums dropped 4.2% to $16.5 billion.
Liberty Mutual Insurance Cos. remained No. 2 as net premiums written decreased 3.3% to $37.23 billion and American Family Insurance Group retained the No. 3 position with NPW down 2.5% to $17.34 billion, according to the ranking.
Among the 10 largest property/casualty mutual insurers, No. 7 Sentry Insurance Group posted the strongest growth. Its NPW rose 14.8% to $5.19 billion.
The ranking lists mutual property/casualty net premiums written last year and the percentage of change from the prior year. It includes two years of rankings for the 100 largest mutual property/casualty writers.
