2026 Best's Rankings: Total Auto DPW Rise in Every State Except Florida and Louisiana
OLDWICK, N.J. //BestWire// - Total automobile insurance direct premiums written rose last year in every state except Florida and Louisiana, according to a new Best's Rankings report.
They declined 2.6% in No. 3 Florida, to $39.2 billion. No. 21 Louisiana DPW dropped 0.3% to $7.18 billion.
Conversely, total auto DPW increased 10% to $57.31 billion in California, the No. 1-ranked state. It had a 12.8% share of DPW of the grand total.
The greatest rate of increase was in New Jersey, where DPW climbed 11.1% to $14.94 billion, moving it ahead of Illinois to No. 7.
The leading writer in the rankings was Progressive Insurance Group, with a 17.6% market share, followed by State Farm Group, with a 15.9% share.
The ranking lists states ranked in 2025 and 2024 by total auto direct premiums written, market share delineated by agency and direct written and as a percentage of the grand total, percent change year-over-year, the two largest writers in each state and their market share.
The Best's Rankings includes the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada, North Mariana Islands and other.
Grand total premiums rose 4.1% to $449.41 billion.
