2026 Best's Rankings: California Has Biggest Auto Liability Market in US
OLDWICK, N.J. //BestWire// - California had more automobile liability insurance premiums written in it than any other state, with State Farm Group in the pole position among carriers, according to a new Best's Rankings report.
The ranking saw little movement, with all of the top five states retaining their rank from the prior year. The $272.01 billion in total auto liability DPW nationwide was up 6% from the prior year, according to the report.
California had $33.09 billion in premiums written statewide in 2025, which accounted for 12.2% of the U.S. total, according to the report. State Farm held a 10.4% market share in the category, followed by Auto Club Enterprises Insurance Group with a 10.1% market share.
Florida was second among states with insurers there writing $28.5 billion in DPW at the close of 2025, or 10.5% of the total for the United States. Progressive Insurance Group topped the list of carriers with a market share of 25.2% and Berkshire Hathaway Insurance was second with 16.7%
In third was Texas with $27.65 billion, which amounted to 10.2% of the total nationwide. Progressive also topped the ranks of carriers in the state, with a market share of 22%. State Farm was second with 13%, according to the ranking.
States were ranked by the number of companies operating there, percentage change from 2024, market share and leading writers, among other items.
