2026 Best's Rankings: Progressive Ties State Farm US Private Passenger Auto Market Share
OLDWICK, N.J. //BestWire// - Progressive Insurance Group drew within a hair's breadth of the No. 1 U.S. private passenger automobile insurance spot last year, tying State Farm Group for market share, according to a new Best's Ranking report.
Progressive increased direct premiums written by 14.9% — the greatest jump among the 25 largest writers of the line — to $69.01 billion. Its year-over-year market share rose 1.9% to 18.6%.
State Farm's premiums increased 2.1% to $69.16 billion and its market share declined 0.3% from 2024.
No. 3 Berkshire Hathaway Insurance's DPW rose 2.7% to $42.91 billion, enough to maintain its 11.6% share of the private-passenger auto market.
Premiums dropped at nine of the 25 top writers, according to the Best's Rankings. The steepest decline was at Nationwide P&C Group, down 15.3% to $4.07 billion. It slipped to No. 14.
Total U.S. property/casualty private-passenger auto premiums grew 3.4% in 2025 to $371.58 billion.
The ranking includes 2025 direct premiums written, the percentage change and share of company overall premiums as well as three years of market share and adjusted loss ratios.
