2026 Best's Rankings: French Carriers Dominate List of Europe's Top Mutual Insurers by 2024 GPW
OLDWICK, N.J. //BestWire// - France-based insurer Société de Groupe d'Assurance Mutuelle Covéa topped AM Best's inaugural ranking of European mutual insurers, with the country dominating the top of the list, according to a Best's Rankings report.
Covéa had gross premiums written of $28.82 billion last year with capital and surplus of $22.32 billion, according to the data. No. 2 SGAM AG2R La Mondiale, also domiciled in France, had GPW of $15.19 billion, with a capital and surplus of $3.21 billion.
In all, French insurers comprised six of the top 10 European mutual insurers.
Germany's HUK-COBURG Haftpflicht-Unterstützungs-Kasse took third place with $12.66 billion in GPW and $8.31 billion in capital and surplus, according to the ranking.
Next was No. 4 Alecta Tjänstepension Ömsesidigt, of Sweden, which had GPW of $10.39 billion and a capital and surplus of $9.24 billion, according to the ranking. French insurer Mutuelle d'Assurance des Instituteurs de France was No. 5, with GPW of $8.72 billion and capital and surplus of $6.14 billion.
The three-page report ranks Europe's top 100 mutual insurers and details their country of domicile, 2024 gross premiums written and capital and surplus.
