2026 Best’s Rankings: Progressive Retains Leading Commercial Auto Spot Based on DPW
OLDWICK, N.J. //BestWire// - Progressive Insurance Group was once again the largest United States writer of commercial automobile insurance, based on direct premiums written, during 2025, according to a new Best’s Rankings report.
The carrier was able to remain No. 1 despite DPW declining 5.7% to $10.18 billion and its market share shrinking to 13.1% in 2025 from 14.9% in 2024, the ranking said.
Travelers also saw no movement from the year prior as it remained No. 2 in the ranking with $4.21 billion in DPW, which was up 9.1% from the year prior.
Berkshire Hathaway Insurance moved from No. 5 to No. 3 on the most recent ranking as its DPW increased 47.5% to $3.89 billion. Old Republic Insurance Group fell to No. 4 from No. 3 the year prior DPW of $3.35 billion and Liberty Mutual Insurance Cos. dropped to No. 5 from No. 4 with DPW of $2.80 billion.
The total U.S. commercial auto insurance sector saw DPW increase 7.8% to $77.83 billion. The sector’s adjusted loss ratio was 66.8.
The report includes 2025 direct premiums written, percent change in DPW, several years of market share data and adjusted loss ratios.
