2026 Best's Rankings: Large Swings in US P/C Commercial Multiperil Top Writer Positions
OLDWICK, N.J. //BestWire// - Several of the 20 largest U.S. property/casualty commercial multiperil (total) insurers changed their ranking by three or more positions last year, according to a new Best's Rankings report.
Berkshire Hathaway Insurance had the largest swing, dropping to No. 18 from No. 13 in the prior year after direct premiums written fell 33.3% to $1.04 billion. Its market share slipped 1.2 percentage points since 2023 to 1.5%.
Allstate Insurance Group moved in the opposite direction, rising four spots to No. 11 after DPW increased 19.3% to $1.7 billion. Since 2023 Allstate gained 0.5% of U.S. commercial multiperil (total) market share, holding 2.4% last year.
Brotherhood Mutual Insurance Co. rose to No. 20 from No. 23 on an 11.7% rise in DPW to $823.66 million.
Industrywide premiums for the line rose 4.4% in 2025 to $70.05 billion.
Travelers Group remained the top writer of U.S. commercial multiperil (total).
Hartford Insurance Group overtook Chubb INA Group to become the second-largest insurer of the line. Its DPW grew 12.5% against 4.3% growth at Chubb.
The report includes 2025 direct premiums written and percentage change, three years of market share and adjusted loss ratios and the percentage share of company premiums for the line.
