2026 Best’s Rankings: Top Inland Marine Carriers See Little Movement as Sector Premiums Rise
OLDWICK, N.J. //BestWire// - There was little change in the top 10 inland marine insurers in the United States this past year as the sector’s premiums rebounding from a down 2024, according to a new Best’s Rankings report.
U.S. inland marine insurers saw a 3% increase in direct premiums written, which reached $35.70 billion 2025, the ranking said. The top 25 insurers saw DPW grow 2.1% to $27.31 billion.
In 2024, the sector saw DPW decline 4.8% to $34.68 billion, according to the previous ranking (BestWire, Aug. 22, 2025).
The only shake up atop the ranking was Zurich Insurance US PC Group moving up one spot to No. 5 as it saw DPW grow 4.7% to $1.59 billion. Zurich overcame No. 6 American International Group, which saw DPW decline 1.2% to $1.52 billion.
Despite flat DPW results, Liberty Mutual Insurance Cos. retained its No. 1 position with $4.49 billion in DPW. Among the top 10 insurers, No. 2 CNA Insurance Cos. saw the largest drop in DPW, which declined 9.7% to $2.61 billion.
No. 3 Allianz US PC Insurance Cos. saw DPW decline 1.3% to $2.56 billion and No. 4 Chubb INA Group’s DPW was up 4.5% to $1.96 billion.
Rounding out the top 10 were No. 7 Assurant P&C Group, $1.30 billion; No. 8 FM Group, $1.10 billion; No. 9 Travelers Group, $1.02 billion; and State Farm Group, $938.2 million, according to the ranking.
A recent Best’s Market Segment Report found that inland marine continues to outperform the broader U.S. property/casualty sector, despite limit premium growth that is primarily driven by inflation and ancillary coverages (BestWire, Aug. 18, 2026).
The report includes direct premium written, change in premiums, market share, adjusted loss ratio and percentage of the line in the company’s overall business.
