2026 Best's Rankings: DPW Drops 43.7% at Citizens in Florida; Adjusted Loss Ratio Improves to 7.3%
OLDWICK, N.J. //BestWire// - Direct premiums written declined 43.7% at Citizens Property Insurance Corp. in Florida last year to $2.59 billion, according to a new Best's Rankings report of U.S. property catastrophe risk property/casualty writers.
Citizens' share of the property catastrophe risk market was 0.5% last year, less than half of the 1.1% share it held two years earlier. During the same period its adjusted loss ratio improved from 32.1% to 7.3%.
Independence Pet Insurance Group notably moved up to No. 84 from No. 123 in 2024 after DPW rose 79.9% to $884.1 million.
Industry premiums for the risk increased 4.5% in 2025 to $555.64 billion. Year-over-year the adjusted loss ratio improved to 49.8 from 58.3.
No. 1 State Farm Group increased DPW 5% to $71.1 billion.
Premiums declined at two of the 10 largest writers: No. 5 Liberty Mutual Insurance Cos. and No. 6 Berkshire Hathaway Insurance.
Chubb INA Group was the sole top 10 writer to see its adjusted loss ratio worse from the prior year, to 59 from 56.4.
The report includes 2025 direct premiums written and percentage change, three years of market share and adjusted loss ratios and the percentage share of company premiums for the line.
