AM Best has maintained the under review with negative implications status for the Financial Strength Rating of B++ (Good) and the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating of “bbb+” (Good) of Cowen Reinsurance S.A. (Cowen Re) (Luxembourg).
The Credit Ratings (ratings) reflect Cowen Re’s balance sheet strength, which AM Best assesses as very strong, as well as its adequate operating performance, limited business profile and appropriate enterprise risk management.
The ratings of Cowen Re were initially placed under review with negative implications on June 15, 2023, due to the uncertainty regarding Cowen Re’s future ownership, given that AM Best does not expect the company to form a part of The Toronto-Dominion Bank’s (TD Bank) long-term plans. Additionally, the negative implications status also reflects the negative trend on the company’s operating performance, which continued to deteriorate in 2023, when Cowen Re reported a pre-tax loss of USD 5.5 million (as calculated by AM Best, before movements in equalisation reserves).
The ratings will remain under review with negative implications until AM Best has gained certainty regarding the company’s long-term ownership and business plans.
